Did you know that April is organ donation awareness month?
It would not surprise me if your answer is no as organ donation awareness is somewhat of a taboo subject largely because it involves acknowledging our own mortality. We, as a culture, are not comfortable with death as a reality.
Did you know that the point at which most Americans register as organ donors is through the department of motor vehicles?
Did you know that there are currently ~115,000 individuals awaiting a potentially life-saving organ transplant?
Did you know that another individual is added to the list every 10 minutes and 22 individuals die awaiting transplant?
Did you know that ~60% of individuals on the transplant list are minorities?
Did you know that the age of ~40% of all organ donors is greater than 50 years of age?
Did you know that 48,000 individuals have their sight restored through corneal transplants each year?
Did you know that 50% of all organ donations are authorized, confirmed through the organ donor registry?
Did you know that while greater than 90% of Americans believe that organ donation is not only a good thing to do, but it is the right thing to do, only 58% have actually registered?
Did you know that ALL the major religions of the world leave the decision to be an organ donor up to the individual?
Do you realize that you have an opportunity to impact not only one individual, but 8 not to mention the ripple effect?
The intention behind this post is to educate and equip you to make an informed decision regarding organ donation [and] to support your teenagers as they decide whether or not to ‘check the box’ at the DMV.
It has been 4,000 days today that I have been privileged to carry the heart of a lovely 17-year-old young lady because she checked the box at the DMV not because she thought she would die young, but because she believed it was the right thing to do.
I am a registered organ donor; are you? If not, I implore you to please consider making a lasting impact in the life of an individual, their family, their friends, the world.
